- French society was organized into three estates - 1. Clergy, 2. Nobility, and 3.Businessmen; peasants; shopkeepers; servants; merchants; lawyers; artisans; labours.
- 90% of the population was made up by the third estate.
- The third estates have to pay different taxes like Tithes(A tax levied by the church comprising one-tenth of the agricultural production) and Taille(A tax to be paid directly to the state).
- The first two estates enjoyed certain privileges by birth, they don't pay any tax.
