1. They dirty the house with poop or vomit.

They steal food off the counters when you are not looking. I’ve had five dogs, three different breeds, and they have each stolen a rib roast beef sitting too close to the edge of the counter. [np-related]
3. When you go away you need a dog sitter or have to pay for some luxury spa so the dog will have a better time than you.
4. You may end up loving dogs too much. A friend told me when her black lab died in old age she wept for a month and decided never to have another dog because she couldn’t go through such emotional agony again. Now this is a woman with much beloved children and grandchildren. Dogs are strange; humans are stranger.
5. Some dogs, such as my own, go mad when the vacuum cleaner is turned on. Hysterical barking, whining and cleaner carpets don’t make for a pleasant Monday.
