HELLO THERE....
It is very difficult for some people (specially those who do not have any interest with Chemistry) to understand the concept of atoms and molecules and moles.
Let me give you an example first.
Suppose you, with your other friends, are sitting inside a big room.
Then, the room (which is containing you all) is a mole.
=> So, mole is a container.
You and your other friends can be considered as molecules.
The organs, cells, and tissues, of which you all are made up of, can be considered as atoms.
Hence, many atoms form molecules (in case of monoatomic elements, one atom makes one molecule).
Many molecules form mole or matter (as stated in the above example).
THE ABOVE WAS JUST AN EXAMPLE.
Atoms are minute (very small, can't seen by naked eyes) particles, and so are molecules.
Your teacher is right.
Because, atoms are the smallest constituents of matter.
Atoms form molecules, and molecules form matter.
So, it is right to say that matter is made up of molecules and it is also right to say that matter is made up of atoms.
The Definition of matter is that, matter is anything that has a mass and occupies a space. You can refer to the diagram for a more clear understanding.
THANKS!
