Caroline McGhie celebrates the beauty of the original bungalow - inspired by the Raj and transported and rebuilt in Blighty

As she draws the curtains of Pleasaunce Cottage each morning, Marian Parker could be forgiven for thinking she is in a scene from Indian Summers. Her house is a classic bungalow, an early colonial pavilion of the type Julie Walters’s character Cynthia Coffin would have been proud to own. Marian, however, doesn’t look out on the misty peaks of the Himalayas, but on the manicured lawns of Dormans Park, Surrey.

The bungalow was built in 1889 and the previous owner moved in during the Thirties, the decade in which ITV’s £14 million Sunday-night series is set, telling the story of the decline of the British Empire and the birth of modern India. And it is to the British Raj that we owe the bungalow – the word evolved from bangla, meaning anything from Bengal. Its purpose was to house British officers and colonial administrators in easy-to-erect buildings with shady verandas that allowed cool air to circulate.
