What is certain is that the results of tests and examinations can form the basis of young people’s self-judgements, aspirations and fears. For a small proportion of students they become a serious obstacle to demonstrating academic achievement and also relate to myriad difficulties in other areas of their life, including relationships and mental health difficulties.

We live in a test-conscious, test-giving culture in which the lives of people are in part determined by their test performance. (Sarason et al., 1960, p.26).
