He is known for his work which is known as ‘Report work on Poverty and Estimation of Below Poverty Line in India’. In 2005 the government of India formed a committee that was focused on finding new ways to calculate the people living below poverty line and professor Suresh Tendulkar was made its chairman.
This committee presented its report to the government of India in 2009 and it said that there is an increase in the people living under poverty line and it is about 37.2% of total population of India in 2009. In the reports of this committee, there was a significant increase in the people living below poverty line because they chose a new method to calculate it.
The earlier committees formed before them only considered the monetary power as the deciding factor but Tendulkar’s committee also focused on other things like the manner in which this money is spent, etc. His report was crucial in making of various policies by government to combat poverty.
