Vietnam was divided into North Vietnam and South Vietnam by the Geneva Agreement of 1954. The northern part was under the Communists led by Ho Chi Minh. The southern part was under the emperor Bao Dai. He was overthrown by a coup led by Ngo Dinh Diem.

A repressive and authoritarian government was set up by Ngo Dinh Diem. Whoever opposed the government was accused of being a Communist and was imprisoned and killed.

The National Liberation Front or NLF was against his dictatorial rule. It got the support of the Ho Chi Minh government in the North. It started fighting for the unification of the country.

The US was worried about the increasing strength of the Communist Party. So it decided to intervene and sent its troops and arms. As a consequence, Vietnam turned into a battlefield.
