by Pythagorean
the square of greater side is equal to the the sum squares of other two sides
now see
a) 7, 8, 9
greater side=9
9^2=81
other sides are 7&8
7^2+8^2=49+64
=113
81 is not equal to113 so it is not a Pythagorean triplet
b) 5, 12, 13
greater side=13
13^2=169
12^2+5^2=25+144
=169
so it is Pythagorean triplet
