1.ionic compounds are formed as a result of transfer of electrons from one atom to another atom whereas covalent compounds are formed when electrons are mutually shared between atoms
2.ionic compounds have large electronegtivity difference whereas covalent compounds have less electronegtivity difference

Properties of ionic compound:-
1.They are generally hard, solid in structures due to the strong force of attraction between the positive and negative ions.
2.Ionic compounds are brittle.
3.A solution of ionic compound in water conducts electricity.
4.Ionic compounds are generally soluble in water and insoluble in the solvents like petroleum and kerosene.
Properties of Covalent compounds:-
1. These compounds contain bonding between non metals.
2. They have sharing of electrons in constituent atoms.
3. They are either non-polar or have less polarity.
4. They have comparatively weak bonding due to covalent nature.
