Between 80 – 90% of the country remained agrarian during the British rule.

Crops such as cotton, wheat, rice, indigo etc. were exported from India during this period. Canal networks set up by the British, helped to water crops.

The British focused more on cash crops as it fetched them more revenue. For this they taxed crops of staples and also introduced the Forest laws, so that areas in the forests could be used for cash crop cultivation.
