Gender role is a conceptual social role of people and their behaviours based on their gender. Their attitudes and behaviours are considered as acceptable or appropriate based on their gender.

Social institutions have been playing a major role in stereotyping gender role. The stereotyping starts from home where women are expected to be housewives and take care of the household chores whereas the men are breadwinners. The women have been defined as objects of fertility and service.

The society prefers masculine domination rather feminine empowerment. The society and the social institutions give more importance and preference to the males which makes it obvious that there is a huge gap in between the status of the men and women in the society. This is called as gender inequality.

However, it is important that educational institutions start emphasizing the importance of gender equality and bring a change in the social norms.

In social psychology, a stereotype is an over-generalized belief about a particular category of people. It is an expectation that people might have about every person of a particular group. The type of expectation can vary; it can be, for example, an expectation about the group's personality, preferences, or ability..
