Examining a Trend in the Periodic Table of Elements Objective: This topic examines the trend of reactivity in the alkaline earth metals as you go down the second column of the periodic table of elements. Research

Questions: What do you think will happen as you go down the column of alkaline earth metals? What do you think would happen if you went to the first column of the periodic table? Do you notice a trend that could apply to the whole periodic table? Submit Your report in colorful, A4 size sheet.

Answer:

Question 1: As we go down the column of alkaline earth metals (group 2), we see that the metals get bulkier, their ionization potential decreases, melting and boiling points decrease, electron affinity and electronegativity decrease, nuclear charge decreases, and metallic character increases.

The first group of the periodic table shows a higher metallic character with a high affinity to non-metals and has a highly exothermic reaction with water. They have metals like Sodium, Lithium, Potassium, which react quickly with air and lose their shiny lustre.

Trends of atomic mass, ionization potential, electron affinity, electronegativity apply to the whole periodic table.

Hope this helps, cheers!
