Explanation:

Haloalkanes and Haloarenes. Haloalkanes react with KCN to form alkyl cyanides as main product while AgCN form isocyanides as the chief product. Give reason. In case of AgCN mainly covalent in nature thus, nitrogen is free to donate electron pair with haloalkanes and isocyanides is form as the chief product.

Answer:

Because KCN is predominantly ionic and AgCN is predominantly covalent in nature.

Explanation:

CN is an ambident nucleophile (i.e it has two nucleophilic centres C and N).

As KCN is ionic it gives CN ions and as under given condition C-C bond will be more stable than C-N bond so the product obtained is alkyl cyanide.

AgCN is covalent (i.e the bond between Ag and C is covalent) and do not give ions. So, here N becomes the nucleophilic centre and the product obtained is isocyanide.
