their consumption of milk in such a way that the expenditure due to milk
decreases by 4% than before. By what per cent has the family decreased the
consumption of milk?​

Let the family's initial consumption be nlitres of milk.

and the price of milk be p rupee per litre.

⟹ initial expenditure=Rs.np

On 20% increase in price, new price =1.2p

On 20% decrease in consumption, new consumption =0.8n

implies New expenditure=1.2p×0.8n=Rs.0.96np

⟹ decrease in expenditure=npnp−0.96×100=4%
