  • There are two types of substances in an environment.

         1) Biodegradable​ substances and

         2) Non-Biodegradable​ substances

  • 1) Biodegradable​ substances : Those substances which are broken down into simpler, harmless substances in nature in due course of time by the biological process such as the action of microorganisms.
  • Examples : Domestic waste products , urine and faecal matter, sewage , agricultural residue , paper , wood , cloth  and cattle dung etc.

  • 2) Non-Biodegradable​ substances  : Those substances which cannot be broken down into simpler harmless substances in nature by the action of microorganisms.
  • Examples : Plastic , polythene bags , glasses, aluminum cans etc.
