Almost everything electronic these days seems to contain a computer, from a DAB radio to a washing machine to my computer screen to a coffee-maker.

But one of my favourite special purpose computers is based on hydraulics, not electronics. It is the analogue computer that controls the gearshifts in an old pre-digital age automatic gearbox.

General purpose processors (GPP) are designed for general purpose computers such as PCs or workstations. ... All techniques that can increase CPU speed have been applied to GPPs. For example , GPPs usually include on-chip cache and on-chip DMAs. Commonly used math operations are also supported by the on-chip hardware.
