The law of reciprocal proportion states that:-

When 2 different elements separately combine with a fixed mass of a 3rd element, the proportion in which they combine with 1 another shall be either in the same ratio or some multiple of it.

For example:-

⭕️Sulphur and Carbon both form compounds with hydrogen.

⭕️But in methane 12 g of carbon react with 4 g of hydrogen.

⭕️In hydrogen sulphide, 32 g of sulphur react with 2 g of hydrogen.

⭕️Sulphur and carbon form a compound in which the C: S ratio is 12:64 (i.e. CS2).

Law of Reciprocal Proportion Example.........

Here, the mass ratio of carbon and oxygen is 3:8. Similarly, 12 g of C reacts with 32 g of O to form CO2. The mass ratio in which C and O combine with each other is the same as the mass ratio in which they separately combine with a fixed mass of H.
