पुराने जमाने में गुरु शिष्य का सम्बन्ध बड़ा अच्छा होता था। उन दिनों विद्यार्थी अपने गुरु
के घर में रहते थे। गुरु के परिवार के साथ वे अपना सारा विद्यार्थी जीवन बिताते थे। पढ़ने-
लिखने के अलावा वे गुरु की सेवा करना अपना कर्तव्य मानते थे। जंगल से लकड़ी लाते, भोजन

पकाते या परिवार के अन्य कामों में हाथ बँटाते। नतीजा यह होता था कि शिष्य केवल विद्वान
ही नहीं होते थे, वे चरित्रवान भी होते थे।
