valency is the combining capacity of an atom. if the no. of electrons present in the outermost shell of an atom is less than 4 then it will lose electrons and if the no. of electrons in the outermost shell is more than 4 electrons, then it'll gain electrons. the losing or gaining electrons is it's valency. for example, electronic configuration of sodium atom is 2,8,1 the outermost shell have less than 4 electrons. hence, it will lose it's electronic and it's valency will be 1.
