Negative energy is a concept used in physics to explain the nature of certain fields, including the gravitational field and a number of quantum field effects. It's a matter of what you set your reference as. Many conventions for energy from an attractive force set the r = ∞ energy as the zero reference, and in order to escape from orbit you need the difference between the present potential energy and the r = ∞ energy to escape.
