a balance chemical equation occurs when the number of the atoms involved in the reactant side is equal to the number of atoms in the product side. for example=2PbO +C to give 2Pb + CO2

Consider reaction,
Combustion of methane
CH4 + O2 = CO2 + H2O
Here, no of carbon atoms on the reactant side = product side but no of oxygen on reactant side = 2 and on the product side =3 and no of hydrogen =2 and on the reactant side = 4
Needs to be balanced.
Therefore , the equation becomes
CH4 +2O2 = CO2 + 2H2O
