Answer:

viscometer

Physical Pharmacy

BACKGROUND

Ostwald viscometer is use to determine viscosity of Newtonian fluid. When the liquid flow by gravity time required for the liquid to pass between two mark A and B through the capillary tube is determined. The time of flow of liquid under test is compared with time required for the liquid of known viscosity, the viscosity of unknown liquid.1-3

η1 can be determine using following equation.

η1=ʆ1t1/ ʆ2t2 X η2

ʆ1=Density of unknown liquid

t1 =Time of flow of unknown liquid

ʆ2 =Density of standard liquid

t2 =Time of flow of standard liquid

η2=Viscosity of standard liquid

Aim: To determine the viscosity of liquid using Ostwald viscometer.

REQUIREMENTS

Chemical: Distilled water,

Ethanol,

Acetone.

Apparatus: Ostwald viscometer,

Electronic balance,

Stop watch.

PROCEDURE

The viscometer was mounted is vertical position on a suitable stand. Water was filled in to the viscometer up to mark A. The time was counted for water to flow from mark A to mark B. The same procedure was repeated for the test liquid by using the above formula viscosity of the test liquid can be determined.

An instrument called a viscometer is used to gauge a fluid's viscosity and the device known as a rheometer is used for liquids whose viscosities change depending on the flow circumstances.

BACKGROUND

To calculate the viscosity of a Newtonian fluid, an Ostwald viscometer is used. When the liquid flows by gravity, the amount of time needed for the liquid to travel through the capillary tube between two marks A and B is calculated.

The flow time of the liquid being tested is compared to the flow times needed for liquids with known viscosities and unknown viscosities.

η₁ can be determine using following equation.

η₁=ρ₁t₁/ ρ₂t₂ X η₂

ρ₁=Density of unknown liquid

t₁ =Time of flow of unknown liquid

ρ₂ =Density of standard liquid

t₂ =Time of flow of standard liquid

η₂=Viscosity of standard liquid

AIM: To determine the viscosity of liquid using an Ostwald viscometer.

REQUIREMENTS

Chemical: Distilled water, Ethanol, Acetone, apparatus, Ostwald viscometer, Electronic balance, Stop watch.

PROCEDURE

On an appropriate pedestal, the viscometer was positioned vertically. The viscometer had water filled up to the mark A. Water flow between marks A and B took a certain amount of time to complete. Using the aforementioned formula, the same process was repeated to ascertain the viscosity of the test liquid.
