- Generally, there are four trophic levels in an ecosystem because only 10℅ of the energy is transferred from one trophic level to the next trophic level. Hence, trophic levels are limited.
Various trophic levels in an ecosystem are-
- The first trophic level consists of autotrophs such as green plants and algae that can make their own food. They are also called producers.
- The second trophic level consists of herbivores such as cows, deer that cannot make their food and feed on plants. They are also called primary consumers.
- The third trophic level consists of carnivores such as foxes, frogs that cannot make their food and feed on primary consumers or herbivores. They are also called secondary consumers.
- The fourth trophic level consists of other carnivores such as snakes, wolves that cannot make their food and feed on secondary consumers. They are also called tertiary consumers.
- The fifth trophic level consists of apex predators such as lions, tigers that prey on the other carnivores.
