Six types of highways in India are as follows(with explanation) :

  • Golden quadrilateral Super Highways: This has become the major super roads of the country.It's a major developmental project laid down by the government of India. This network of highways link Delhi - kolkata - Chennai - Mumbai with a six lane super highways.The north - south & the east - west corridors are also part of this project.
  • National Highways : They are built with the motive of linking the most extreme parts of the country.They are the most common and extensive network of highways in India.
  • State Highways : These highways connect/link the state capital with different district headquarters.
  • District Highways : These roads are built to connect the district headquarters of the different districts with other remote or far located regions of the district.
  • Other Roads : These are built in rural areas only.These roads link the village with the nearest town.
  • Border Roads : These roads are built and maintained by the Border Roads Organisation of India. These roads are built in the bordering areas of the country ex: Jammu&Kashmir. These roads have more accessibility and more strategic importance.

  • GOLDEN QUADRILATERAL AND SUPER HIGHWAYS: THESE ARE THE ROADS WITH 4 TO 6 LANE ROADS. IT WAS STARTED IN THE YEAR 1999. THESE HIGHWAY NETWORK CONNECT MAJOR CITIES AS WELL AS CULTURAL AND INDUSTRIAL CENTERS OF THE COUNTRY.

  • NATIONAL HIGHWAY : THESE TRUNK ROADS CONNECT THE STATE CAPITALS,PORTS, TOWNS AND CITIES OF THE NATIONAL IMPORTANCE.

  • STATE HIGHWAYS: THEY CONNECT THE DISTRICT HEAD QUARTERS WITH THE STATE CAPITAL AND WITH THE NATIONAL HIGHWAYS.

  • DISTRICT HIGHWAYS : ZILLA PANCHAYAT IS INCHARGE OF THESE ROADS. THEY CONNECT THE TALUK HEAD QUARTERS WITH STATE HIGHWAYS, RAILWAYS ETC.

  • BORDER ROADS : ROADS IN BORDER AREAS , WHICH ARE ESPECIALLY USED FOR DEFENCE PURPOSE, ARE CALLED BORDER ROADS. THESE ROADS ARE FOUND ALONG INDIAN BORDERS WITH PAKISTAN, NEPAL, BHUTAN, BANGLADESH, AND MYANMAR.
