Answers:

a) During running or heavy physical work, the demand of energy is high but the supply of oxygen is limited. To meet the demand of energy, cells respire anaerobically. Glucose is partially broken down into lactic acid. The accumulation of lactic acid so formed causes muscle cramps.

b) In desert plants, stomata is open during the night. At night, plants absorb carbon dioxide and store it. During day time, stomata is closed to prevent loss of water. They use this stored carbon dioxide to perform photosynthesis.
