The bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis has a short segment called Bt gene also known as Cry gene. This gene is involved in the production of a crystalline product called Bt. The product proves toxic when ingested by the pests. The protein becomes activated once it reaches the gut of pests and creates pores in the intestine. This has a killing effect. Hence this gene is used to provide protection to GMO against budworm, bollworm, beetle, borer, etc.
