Biotechnology and its applications>
cry gene are of two types-
cry 1AC
cry2AB
It is a gene found in bacillus thurigenesis
It has this particular gene which is known for producing toxin that when engulfed (If gone in the gut of the insect due to alkaline medium) activates enough toxins to kill the insects■
Uses of cry gene
gene in plants like cotton prevents the insects (cotton bollworm)and other mites from coming and eating away the farmers hardwork.
instead of natural cotton , farmers use bt cotton to cut up their expenses on insecticides.
Bt cotton is more accepted in many parts of India, and having high productivity.
Answer:
The bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis has a short segment called Bt gene also known as Cry gene. This gene is involved in the production of a crystalline product called Bt. The product proves toxic when ingested by the pests. The protein becomes activated once it reaches the gut of pests and creates pores in the intestine. This has a killing effect. Hence this gene is used to provide protection to GMO against budworm, bollworm, beetle, borer, etc.
