The adder and subtractor are primarily used to perform arithmetical functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Digital Adder/Subtractor using 2’s complement method:
- Adders are used in digital calculators for arithmetic addition as well as other devices that use an increment or arithmetic process.
- When dealing with 2's complement, any bit pattern with a sign bit of zero (in other words, a positive number) is the same as a normal binary number.
- If, on the other hand, the sign bit is 1, the corresponding decimal number is negative, and the bit pattern must be converted out of 2's complement.
- Due to the benefits of 2 complement subtraction, it is preferred over 1s complement subtraction in normal subtraction processes.
- There is no need for an end-around carry, and the complexity of 2 complement subtraction is lower.
