Fertilization is the process of fusion of male and female gametes. Male gametes are called male sex cells (sperms) & female gametes are called female sex cells (ova) . Fertilization results in the formation of zygote. Fertilization may occur in two ways :

  • Internal fertilization
  • External fertilization

Internal fertilization ::

In internal fertilization, the fusion of male and female gametes and the formation of zygote takes place inside the body of the female.

For an example : Internal fertilization is in humans. The fusion of male and female gametes and the formation of zygote takes place inside the body of the female (in fallopian tubes).

External fertilization ::

In external fertilization, the fusion of male and female gametes and the formation of zygote takes place outside the body of the female. Examples : External fertilization is seen in frog, fishes.

Also,

How is the external fertilization furthered?

In the cases of those organisms in which external fertilization takes place, female discharges there eggs in water and the male discharges sperms. Then, sperms swim with the help of its tail in the water & reach to the ova(egg) and fertilize the egg ,resulting in the formation of zygote.
