Ganga is a sacred river which is supposed to have come from the heaven after King Bhagirath underwent strict penance for thousand of years to please Brahma, the father of Ganga. His sixty thousand uncles were cursed by the Saint Kapila and they could be liberated by the Ganga's holy water only. When pleased with Bhagirath's tapa, Brahma asked him to propitiate Lord Krishna as the flow of the Ganga to earth might bring massive destruction and Shiv was the only capable of holding that downward flow. After a year's tapasya in which Bhagirrath lived just on air, Lord Shiva was pleased and he agreed to hold the Ganga's flow in his matted locks. (dreadlocks). Since Bhagirath was instrumental in bringing Ganga down to the earth, the river is called Bhagirathi till it meets Alaknanda in Devprayag. When the Ganga flowed Bhagirath's sixty thousand uncles could attain moksha.
There are many rituals which are preferred to be held on the banks of the river Ganga. The funeral ashes are released in Ganga to liberate the soul of the deceased. Bathing in the holy water of the river is said to be auspicious and it released one from the sins he/she has committed. A prayer to liberate one's ancestors is also performed along the ghats of Ganga.
Due to the rituals and growing urbanization and industrialization, the river has become dirty and the water carries many harmful bacteria which make it non-potable. Domestic as well as industrial wastes are let out into the river which further pollutes it. The government has started Ganga Action Plan which aims at restoring the sanctity of the river water.
