Answer:

Insulin is a hormone made by the pancreas that allows your body to use sugar (glucose) from carbohydrates in the food that you eat for energy or to store glucose for future use. Insulin helps keeps your blood sugar level from getting too high (hyperglycemia) or too low (hypoglycemia).

Explanation:

Insulin is Protein-hormone secreted by the beta cells of islets of Langerhans of Pancreas. Deficiency of effective insulin in the body causes a disease called Diabetes mellitus (DM).

Insulin was obtained from the pancreas gland of cattle in 1922. Insulin is a protein containing 51 amino acid. Consists of amino acid linked by peptide bonds, chain A consists of 21 amino acid & chain B consists of 30 amino acid. The two chain are joined through two disulphide linkage.

Insulin is destroyed by proteolytic enzyme in the gut, hence not effective orally.

Function of Insulin.

1) It stimulates utilisation of glucose as respiratory fuel.

2)It stimulates glycogenesis.

3)It prevents gluconeogenesis

4)Also prevents the formation of glucose from non carbohydrate substance such as protein, fat. Hence it acts as a regulator of carbohydrates metabolism.
