Explain about Petrochemical Industry

Petrochemicals are derived from various chemical compounds, mainly from hydrocarbons. These hydrocarbons are derived from crude oil and natural gas. Among the various fractions produced by distillation of crude oil, petroleum gases, naphtha, kerosene and gas oil are the main feed stocks for petrochemical industry.

• Many items are divided from crude petroleum, which provide raw materials for many new industries; hence, these are collectively known as petrochemical industries

• Petrochemical industries are categorized as polymers, synthetic fibres, elastomers, and surfactant intermediate industries.

• Mumbai is the hub of petrochemical industries.

• Three organizations, which are working in the petrochemical sector under the administrative control of the Department of chemicals and Petrochemicals are -

⇒ The Petrofils Cooperative Limited (PCL);
