In the past India, many social reformers felt the need to educate Indians. They felt that without education, the people would not be aware of their surroundings.
As a result pathshalas and maktabals were established which served as primary schools. Tols and Madrasas were for higher education.
They made the students and the people just literate enough and taught many things like languages- Sanskrit, Arabian and Persian, law, religion, astronomy, and medicine.
After the arrival of the British to India, the British felt that these oriental learning was not enough to support the Indians. So they established schools which taught many subjects including English. Examples of British schooling in India were the Calcutta Madrasa established by Warren Hastings and the Benares Sanskrit College by Jonathan Duncan.
Hope this helped!
