Answer:

What are the Differences between Portia and Jessica, as shown in the play “The Merchant of Venice” ? : Portia is beautiful, educated, and talented. She is besieged by suitors at Belmont. However, her father's WILL requires them all to make a Choice among Three Caskets : One of Gold, One of Silver, and One of Lead. Portia may marry the man who Chooses the Right Casket. [Notably, the Casket Story is a Motif common in Folk-Lore.]. It is worthy of mention here that the Prince of Morocco and the Duke of Arragon each Chooses the Wrong Casket. But Bassanio, whom Portia favours, Chooses the Right One : of Lead. Just as both lovers are overjoyed at the Kindness of Fate , A News comes that Antonio has been unable to repay Shylock's debt, because of the apparent loss of his Ventures at Sea, and that Shylock is demanding the Terms of the Bond. After a hasty Wedding Ceremony, Bassanio leaves for Venice. Portia and her maid Nerissa, disguised as men, go to Venice too, for Portia is determined to save Antonio's life. Appearing in the Court as a Lawyer, Portia teaches Shylock how dreadful the Letter of the Law can be when Mercy is Abandoned. She saves the life of Antonio by threatening Shylock with Death if ONE DROP OF BLOOD IS SPILLED IN THE CUTTING OF THE POUND OF FLESH. Shylock is heavily fined and forced to become a Christian. Portia, under disguise as a Lawyer, will accept only the Ring on Bassanio's Finger : A Ring She had given him on his Oath Never to Part With it, as Payment for her Services. Back in Belmont, there is much merriment over the Ring until Portia is disclosed as having been the Lawyer. This constitutes the Main Plot of the Play in which Portia is the Central Female Figure, who bravely faces the crude realities of the World, on the strength of her talent and moral superiority. However, a Sub-Plot of the Play unfolds Jessica, Shylock's Daughter, as the Beloved of Lorenzo. It further tells us how Jessica, who has madly fallen in romantic love with Lorenzo, does elope away with him. The Sub-Plot shows Jessica as One who relatively is less courageous in facing and dealing with the realities either at home or there in the Society, and therefore, Chooses the Way of Elopement with her Lover. The Main Plot and the Sub-Plots of the Play have been brilliantly constructed.
