The small intestine can be divided into three sections: the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum. The duodenum forms the first section of the small intestine. Partially digested food moves from the stomach through the pyloric sphincter and into the duodenum. The pancreas and liver are also connected to the region. Those two organs release their juices (digestive enzymes and bile, respectively) to mix with the partially digested food.
The walls of the duodenum are made of four layers of tissue that are consistent with the structure of the rest of the gastrointestinal tract:
The innermost layer, the mucosa, lines the inner surface of the duodenum and is in contact with chyme passing through the intestinal lumen. It is made of simple columnar epithelial tissue with microvilli on its surface to increase its surface area and improve the absorption of nutrients. Plentiful mucous glands secrete mucus into the lumen to lubricate the intestinal wall and protect it from friction and acidic chyme.
