Changing The Lives of Widows Sati Pratha was banned in 1829. Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar favoured widow re-marriage. British officials supported his cause and passed a law in 1856 that permit widows to remarry. Swami dayanand saraswati, founder of arya samaj, also supported widow re-marriage.
