The tribal revolts of 19th and 20th century under British rule were very frequent. The revolts were very violent. The tribal movements can be divided into –
- Mainland tribal revolts
- Frontier tribal revolts
Some of the common characteristics of the tribal revolts of 19th and 20th century are –
- The violence was against the money lenders and traders. The tribal saw the lenders and traders as agents of British Government.
- They were against the laws of the foreign government. The tribal were afraid that their traditional society will be abolished.
- These revolts were led by a leader who was considered as a Messiah.
- The tribal were always defeated because of their old tools and weapons.
