US-Vietnam war , 18 was a warlike conflict between 1955 and 1975 to prevent Reunification of Vietnam under a communist government. It participated the Republic of Vietnam with the support of the United States and other nations against the local guerrilla of the National Front of Liberation of Viet Cong and the army of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, By China and the Soviet Union. It is estimated that between 1 million and 5.7 million people died. The United States reported 58 159 casualties and more than 1,700 missing, making it the country's longest-running war until the war in Afghanistan.

The conflict began with an attempt to unify the two Vietnams into a single coalition government between nationalists and communists and neutral, according to the initial proposal. US actions to prevent such reunification, coupled with a succession of violent, corrupt and inefficient dictatorships imposed by the United States, led to the lifting of various united groups under the self-styled National Liberation Front, Viet Cong, quickly supported by The then Soviet Union and Mao's China. Initially Saigon was losing ground.

With the massive entry of the United States recovered part of what was lost. But after the events of 1968, the progressive withdrawal of US troops began and the signing of the Paris Peace Accords in 1973, after which the South fought only against the Army of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam until its final defeat and the Reunification of the country on July 2, 1976 as the Communist Socialist Republic of Vietnam. The first three stages were distinguished by the fact that the traditional front lines, where terrorist actions and guerrilla warfare proliferated, faced "search and destroy" missions, the use of mass bombardments and the extensive use of weapons Chemical, by the United States. The last phase was a conventional war. But the end of the contest was only a pause in the confrontations of Indochina. Then the invasions of Cambodia and Laos by Vietnam and this by China. On the contrary the United States lived a retreat of the foreign policy.

The coverage made by the media was permanent, being considered as the first televised conflict in history. This allowed the denunciation of the frequent violations and abuses against Human Rights committed by the two sides. However, it is debated whether such coverage was the main cause of the growing opposition by Western public opinion to US intervention.

This opposition and the fact that it was the first military defeat of the United States created a feeling of bad conscience in the American people before a war considered unfair, the call Vietnam Syndrome. The Syndrome gave way to a pacifist movement and lasted until the 1980s, during the mandates of Ronald Reagan. The Vietnam War became an icon, enduring today, of social groups and left parties largely Of the world, in addition to an example imitated by later fighters.
