Agricultural productivity is basically the productive capacity of the land. It is equal to the agricultural output divided by agricultural inputs.

While forests occur naturally, and are managed by man (sometimes badly), crops do not naturally occur on a scale large enough to supply food for the world. Also, most varieties which are planted nowadays have undergone hybridization and/or genetic modification to reduce pest damage and increase yield, making them much less "natural"

Some adverse affects of increasing agricultural production include:

a. Forests get depleted as large areas are cleared for cultivation of crops.

b. There is large scale deforestation which cause soil erosion and floods.

c. There is climate change due to cutting down of forests.

d. Biodiversity is affected. Many species of trees, plants and animals become extinct.

e. Soil degradation occurs due to constant use of chemicals and pesticides etc.

f. Over irrigation due to agriculture may affect the ground level water table.
