The general phenomenon is that liquids contract on cooling and expand on heating.


However, there is a marked difference in case of water. Water also follows the normal rule but upto a certain extent.


It contracts on cooling upto a temperature of 4°C after which it starts to become less dense, expands till it reaches 0° and forms ice.


Therefore, it can stated that water reaches its maximum density at 4°C. This abnormal behaviour of water is known as the anomalous behaviour of water.
