Covalent character of ionic bond is caused by polarisation.
The ability to polarise the electron cloud depends on
- The size of cation- smaller cation has more concentrated charge as charge/radius ratio is high. this increases the polarising power.
- The size of anion- Bigger anion is more readily polarised as the electron cloud is large and diffuse.
- Eg, LiCl, NaI
