A food chain is a linear network of links in a food web starting from producer organisms and ending at apex predator species, detritivores, or decomposer species. A food chain also shows how the organisms are related with each other by the food they eat. Each level of a food chain represents a different trophic level

The term food chain refers to the sequence of events in an ecosystem, where one organism eats another and then is eaten by another organism.

Linkage of food chain is known as food web.

Food chain and food webs are important for ecological balance because if any organism disappears from one of these chains then the series of feeding one on another would get disturbed.

And if any organism get accumulated at one level then there will be more population of a species at one tropic level, which would again cause ecological imbalance.
