The main reason was the constitutional status of Northern Ireland.Unionists wanted it to remain the part of UK as they were mostly Protestants and considered themselves British
The nationalist were mainly Irish and thus wanted to be a part of Ireland
Religious difference also became one of the reason for conflict as they were Catholic and wanted to be a part of catholic nation
The employment opportunities were very low for the Catholics as compare to the protestants, as most of the business owners were protestants
