In India, women are discriminated in many ways in daily life. They are:

1) Literacy rate of women is very low compared to that of men. For men, it is 76% but for women, it is just 54%.

2) In many parts of India, parents prefer to have sons over daughters and find ways to have the girl child aborted before they are born. Methods like female foeticide and female infanticide are used.

3) Even though the Equal Remuneration Act was passed in 1976, women are paid less than women.

4) The proportion of women among the highly paid and valued jobs is still very less. On an average, an Indian woman works 1 hour more than a man but much of her work is not paid and therefore not valued.

5) Women are subject to violence and not even safe in their own homes as they suffer from domestic violence.
