Answer

Causes of Deforestation in India under Colonial rule.

  • The British directly encouraged the production of commercial crops like jute, sugar, wheat and cotton. The demand increased in the nineteenth centuary Europe where food grains were needed to feed the growing urban population.fcultivation so that they could yield agricultural products and increase the revenue and enhance the income of the state. Between 1880 and 1920 the cultivated land rose by 6.7 million hectares.
  • Colonial States considered the Forests to be 'Unproductive' and were considered to be wilderness that had to be brought under cultivation, so that the land could yield agricultural products and enhance the income of the state. Between 1880 and 1920 cultivated area rose by 6.7 million hectares.
  • Oak Forests had started to dissapear in England by the nineteenth centuary. This created a problem for timber supply for the Royal Navy. The English ships couldnt be built without a regular and proper supply of timber. When search parties were sent to India to look out for Timber forests, they found plenty and withing a few decades, tree's were felled on a large scale and vast quantities of timber were exported from India.
  • Railways were neccesary for Colonial Trade and movement of Imperial Troops. Wood was now being felled more to meet the requirements like wood for fuel to run locomotives and to lay railway lines and wood for sleepers essential to hold the tracks together etc. Each mile of railway track required between 1760 to 2000 sleepers.
  • Commodities required by Europeans. Large areas of natural forests were cleared to make way for tea, coffee and rubber plantations to meet Europe's growing need for these commodities, The colonial government took over the forests, and gave vast areas to European planters at cheap rates.
