The following changes were made towards decentralisation in the constitution of India through the amendment made in 1992
1. A separate and independent election commission was set up to conduct free and fair local elections
2. It became mandatory to hold local elections after every 5 years
3. . One third of the seats were to be reserved for women
4. Sears were also reserved for scheduled tribes (STs), scheduled castes (SCs) and other backward classes (OBCs)
5. . The central government was required to share some powers with local government .
