The jute industry is one of the oldest in the country. The first Jute mill was established in (Rishra )near Kolkata in 1859. Jute industry is a major foreign exchange earner accounting for about 30% of world's export of jute goods.

The jute industry is concentrated in the Hugli river basin do too many favourable factors such as

1. Raw jute is available from West Bengal about 70% of jute production in India .
2. Coal is available from the nearby Raniganj coalfields .
3. Easy water transport is available through rivers and canals .
4. Early start .
5. Warm humid climate is favourable .

Explanation:

The main reasons for concentration of jute factories aroun Hugli river are:

a) West Bengal is the highest producer of raw jute.

b) They get cheap labor from their neighboring states such as Orissa, Bihar.etc.

c) Jute manufacturing requires a lot of water. Locating factories near the river ensures ample supply of water to the factories.

d) It also ensures easy import of goods required for the manufacturingof jute products and  exports of finished products.

These  are the reasons why jute millsare concentrated mostly along theHugli  river.
