1. In 1956, ab act was passed to recognise Sinhala as the only official language.

2. The government followed preferential policies and favoured Sinhala people for govt jobs and University positions.

3. A new Constitution stipulated that the state shall protect and foster Buddhism.

4. The Tamils felt alienated due to such discriminatory attitude of the Govt.

5. The relations between the Sinhala and Tamils deteriorated and led to a civil war.
