Methods of separation

1. Magnetic separation

  • Magnetic Separation is the process of separating components of mixtures by using magnets to attract magnetic materials. The process that is used for magnetic separation detaches non-magnetic material with those who are magnetic. Not all metals are magnetic; gold, silver and aluminum are some examples.

  • Ex - If a mixture contains iron as one of the constituent it can be separated using a magnet.

  • E.g. - mixing of iron fillings and sulphur can be separated by this method. Iron filings will be attracted towards magnet.

2. Sublimation

  • Sublimation is the process of transition of a substance from the solid to the gaseous state without passing through the liquid state.

  • The solid substance which undergoes sublimation is called sublime and the solid substance obtained on cooling the vapours is called sublimate

  • It is used to separate mixtures that contain a sublimate with volatile component from a non-sublimate impurity. The sublime will sublimate and non-sublimate impurity will left.

  • E.g - Ammonium chloride, common salt, Iodine, etc.

3. Crystallization

  • The process of cooling a hot concentrated solution of a substance to obtain a crystal is called crystallization.

  • Crystallization is also a chemical solid–liquid separation technique, in which mass transfer of a solute from the liquid solution to a pure solid crystalline phase occurs.

  • It is used for obtaining a pure substance from an umpire substance.

Answer:

Methods of separation of substances:-

1. WINNOWING: Winnowing is based on the fact that if the mixture is containing two components and one is lighter than the other one, then both the components can be separated by a blow of air. Mixture is allowed to fall from a height. Lighter component gets separated from the heavier component due to wind.

EXAMPLE: Separating husk from grain.

2. HAND PICKING: The method in which substances in a mixture can be separated by just picking them out with the help of hand from the mixture is known as handpicking method of separation.

EXAMPLE: Separating stones from pulses.

3. Magnetic Separation: Magnetic separation is the process of separating components of mixtures by using magnets to attract magnetic materials. The process that is used for magnetic separation detaches non-magnetic material with those which are magnetic.

EXAMPLE: Separating iron fillings from a mixture of iron and copper fillings.
