Answer:

According to the Constitution of India, there are 645 distinct tribes in India. The census of 2011 showed us that Bhil is the largest tribe in our country having a population of over 40 lacs! Tribal societies and tribal people form an integral part of our society. Let us learn about them.

Tribal societies were absolutely different from those which existed in big cities. They did not follow the social rules and rituals, prescribed by the Brahmanas because they divided societies into numerous unequal classes. These societies were known as tribes. There was a unique bond of kinship among the members of each tribe.

A member of a tribal community residing in hilly area:

Agriculture is the most common occupation of people living in hilly areas in India. It also includes having livestock, poultry, etc.

For example, if I am living in the northeastern part of the country in the state of Nagaland then most probably my occupation will be framing and most preferably I would be cultivating rice as it is the staple food in this region. Along with the cultivation of rice, I would also be growing vegetables for my personal use and the excess of it could be sold in the local market. Fishes can also be reared in the rice fields.

Pigs rearing is also common in the region along with poultry farming. But there can be other means of income too. If I do not own any land then I could work as an agricultural labourer or a trader in the local market. There are a bunch of other occupations that a person can have if they live in hilly areas but the most common and the most important occupation is farming.
