The two causes of rise of slums in cities are:
- Urban poverty:
The rate of urban poverty is increasing that leads to the establishment of slums. A lot of rural population is shifting to urban areas but cannot afford the cost of living in the urban areas giving rise to the slums.
- Poor housing plan and infrastructure:
In cities, affordable and low cost housing is not available and this gives rise to slums. In addition, the people who come from rural areas to cities cannot afford the infrastructure costs thereby increasing slum areas.
